Laura Atkinson, mezzo-soprano,
is a recent graduate of the master of music degree program in vocal performance
at Yale University, at the Institute of Sacred Music.
While a student at Yale,
she studied with the American lyric tenor, James R. Taylor. Upon graduation from
the Institute, she was awarded the inaugural Margot Fassler Award for the Excellence in Performance
of Sacred Music.
At Yale, Ms. Atkinson was a member of Schola Cantorum, a vocal ensemble led by Simon
Carrington. Recently, as a soloist in this ensemble, Ms. Atkinson toured Bach's
B-Minor Mass throughout China and Korea. With the Yale Baroque Opera Project, she sang the lead role
of Medea in Cavalli's Il Giasone, for which she received favorable review in The New Yorker.
The
2010 season holds exciting engagements for Ms. Atkinson; she will be heard as
the alto soloist for Handel's Foundlings Anthem, Mozart's
Requiem and Vivaldi's
Gloria. She will also sing Brahms' Alto Rhapsody at the opening ceremonies for the Clayton
Arts Center in Tennessee.
This summer, Ms. Atkinson returns to the Oregon Bach Festival as
a soloist for the esteemed Discovery Series under the direction of Helmut Rilling,
where she will sing Bach's B-Minor
Mass. Ms. Atkinson will also join the Carmel Bach Festival as an Adams Fellow
for the 2010 season.
Ms. Atkinson has worked with such distinguished conductors
as Helmut Rilling, Nicholas McGegan, Paul Hillier and Stephen Layton.
Ms. Atkinson earned
her bachelor of music education degree with concentration in voice from Maryville
College in east Tennessee. She is a Louisville, Kentucky native.
