Hailed by the Boston Globe for his “exceptional beauty of tone,” countertenor Jonas Laughlin has just completed his masters program in Opera Performance at the Boston Conservatory. While there as a full-scholarship student, Mr. Laughlin created the role of Oberon in Britten’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream and the title role in Philip Glass’ Akhnaten.
Mr. Laughlin recently made his New York City debut at the 92nd Street Y singing Britten’s Canticle II: Abraham and Isaac. Last summer, Mr. Laughlin participated as a Young Artist in the Britten-Pears Programme’s Aldeburgh Festival, singing the alto roles in a concert version of Purcell’s The Fairy Queen conducted by Harry Bickett. Recent concert highlights include appearances with the Palm Beach Opera, the Boston Cecilia, the MIT Chorale, and the Boston Fine Arts Chorale.
Mr. Laughlin has been a winner of competitions at the West Palm Beach Opera, NATS North Carolina State and Mid-Atlantic Regionals, and the Charlotte Opera Guild.
A native of North Carolina, Mr. Laughlin also holds a B.A. (summa cum laude) in Music from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, which he attended as a James M. Johnston Scholar. He is a proud member of Phi Beta Kappa and has been inducted into the Order of the Golden Fleece, UNC’s most prestigious and selective honorary society.
