Comments from Students

Learning to use your voice can have a profound effect on other parts of your life. From time to time, in an email or letter, I get spontaneous feedback that warms my heart and makes all the work worthwhile.

These are all actual, unedited, unsolicited comments from private clients. A few of the comments below are anonymous, end-of-semester evaluations by university students, and I don't know the specific identity of those writers.

Your warm up and breath exercises allow me to focus on the music and not worry about my voice. It feels so good to sing! The focus on breath also helps me to relax.
      - school teacher/amateur singer

Thank you for your help preparing me for yesterday's audition. What a difference it makes to work past the fear and remember going through each phrase with you.... even if all the concepts haven't completely sunk in yet, I felt more grounded and confident than I would have expected!
      - professional soprano, auditioning for the San Francisco Opera

You are an amazing wizard of a voice teacher!
      - semi-pro singer

I had a breakthrough yesterday in the performance! I achieved the most peace of mind and peace of heart as I was singing in front of the audience. It just felt so natural and comfortable, it was awesome: a lot of incredible emotions going through me. I was able to pour my heart out.

It's amazing how well my voice is responding to what we're doing. It's beyond belief for me at times. This whole process with you is a pure joy and is really changing my life. Thank you!

I'm kind of amazed when I think how much I was struggling just a few months ago. It is a wonderful gift to begin to feel comfortable singing. I feel extremely joyful before, during and after our lessons. Thanks for sharing your knowledge and experience and enthusiasm.

"Psychologically, you gave me such a huge uplift. I have felt so good about my singing since I was last with you - it's just incredible. It's hard for me to describe the feeling I have, it's almost euphoric. I just thank you so much for how you've helped me."
      - serious amateur singer

"You are such a jewel of a voice coach David, and voice-life coach really.  The clarity, precision and style of your coaching, along with your wonderful personal support, gave me a tremendous foundation for my studio session yesterday. And, I can continue now with the breathing and preparation work, the refinements. You have lifted me to a new level of respect and care for my voice and my whole body as the instrument.  I am very, very grateful to you."
     - professional voiceover artist for major nationwide radio ads

"Thank you for a transformational lesson yesterday. The mentoring on posture and breathing you shared allowed me to begin peeping into a voice and sensation I did not know I could feel before. It felt wonderful and, for lack of better word, addictive."
      - serious amateur singer (tenor)

"Thought you'd be happy to hear this: I just vocalized up to a high e-natural! Turns out my tongue is the culprit. The breathing stuff we did the other day allowed me to calm down enough to notice that whenever a scale or arpeggio ascends, so does my tongue. I can't wait to see what happens next!"
      - professional singer (mezzo-soprano)

"I discovered a wonderful new place in my heart through my voice."
      - young professional singer (soprano)

"You are such a positive and deeply moving influence in my life. How to be a musician and a real person -- you'll always be so so special to me."
      - professional singer (soprano)

"I had an audition today for the Festival Opera Chorus. I sang cleanly, with good breath - and some expression!! I was so proud of myself. This was my first real audition!! I am still smiling :-). I can do this! I have a mid-range and a chest voice and a head voice!!"
      - amateur singer (soprano)

"I've been taking voice lessons for twenty years. You're the first person who really taught me how to sing."
      - established professional singer (mezzo)

"He is one of the best teachers I've ever had, not just for voice but for anything.."
      - anon. student evaluation, SFSU

"You're really my guiding light."
      - established professional singer (baritone)

"A whole new spectrum of positive qualities has come into my singing."
      - young professional singer (tenor)

"I just wanted to thank you for all the incredible help and support you've given me. I really don't know how I could have made it through this week (or this year!) without you. You are a source of immense inspiration, a wonderful coach/teacher, and a good friend.
   - semi-professional singer (mezzo)

"An incredible experience of release - of personal and direct self-expression."
      - young professional singer (mezzo)

"Somehow even being in your presence makes it easier and more enjoyable to sing."
      - professional actor/singer

"Because of your generosity of spirit and knowledge I felt like I really wanted to do my very best; you enabled me to do so. You are one of the very few people who have had that effect on me"
      - young professional singer (baritone)

"Our time working together is one of the things that makes me feel good in life and I really look forward to it. Not only do I feel that I really learn something that has always fascinated me, but I also draw from your positive energy, and that is something I pass on to others in my life. You are a good role model for me."
      - amateur singer, UC Berkeley MBA student

"You really established not only my voice but also my self-confidence. Both of those are really important to me."
      - serious amateur singer (M.D. at Alta Bates Hospital, Berkeley)

"This is the first voice lesson I've ever had where I felt better at the end of the hour than I did at the beginning."
      - hospital nurse / soprano

"Other teachers can teach us how to sing, you help us find our voices."
      - anon. student evaluation, SFSU

"You not only help us to sing better, you helped us find our hearts."
      - anon. student evaluation, UC Berkeley

"It takes a patient, determined, funny, talented, and kind teacher to bring out the changes in my singing this past year. You taught me that sharing of one's artistic self is beautiful in itself, and that we have something to give. It's about making music that means something to you and to others."
     - public school music teacher / university voice major
