My Training as a Singer and Teacher

Throughout my adult life, my primary teacher has been Dale Moore, Professor Emeritus of Indiana University and the Eastman School of Music, and several times national president of the National Association of Teachers of Singing.

I have also studied with Luigi Ricci, one of the most renowned Italian vocal coaches of the 20th Century, and with Alfredo Kraus, a great tenor who above all helped me open my imagination to phrasing and artistry.

Beyond these wonderful mentors, the most significant "training" in my life has been hands-on: thousands of performances as concert and opera soloist around the world. I'm grateful to the colleagues who generously shared their wisdom over the years.

My Teaching Philosophy

My teaching style is based on the Italian "bel canto" system of vocal training. I pay special attention to vowel purity, posture, and breath. This results in a free, effortless, expressive tone production and articulation, and a smooth and legato vocal line.

I teach you what to pay attention to in your singing, what to notice, and how you can identify those habits and elements of your singing that are holding you back, preventing you from reaching your full potential.

I take my work very seriously, but I am not a serious person! I believe that a light-hearted studio atmosphere, combined with dedication and concentration, will always yield the most positive results.

I will never "put you on the spot" or diminish you emotionally or artistically. It's my job to help you build on your natural talent, and help you develop your vocal instrument so you can be happy with your singing.
