What is this thing called "Love?"

David Gordon - Singer / Teller of Tales

with Melinda Coffey - Pianist / Co-Conspirator

May 1, 2005    Carmel

"What on earth are they up to?"

We have been performing music together for more than a decade, and we lately are weaving some of our favorite songs into a sort of tapestry in combination with a few poems and other whimsical musings.

I. The Spark of Romance

II The Flame of Love

III. Loneliness and Longing

IV. Ever After . . .

This is more cabaret than "concert." Informal, up close, and personal. While we do have a plan, we may not be absolutely sure what we're going to do until a few minutes before it happens. We're just sort of like that. We are into the whole "outside the box" thing, and we want to have fun. If we have fun, you will, too.

But in case you want to know, here is the list of (some of) the songs which actually are on our current playlists. At least some if not many of these songs will be on the April 3 program. (Dates in parentheses are the year the song was written.)

Con vei la lauzeta mover - Bernart de Ventadorn (late 1100s)
Reis Glorios - Gerard de Borneil (mid 1100s)
Flow my Tears - John Dowland (1597)
Come again, sweet love - ditto (1601 )
Die Mainacht - Johannes Brahms (1872)
And Wilt Thou Leave Me Thus? - Peter Warlock (1920)
From Far, From Eve and Morning - Ralph Vaughan-Williams (1916)
I'm so lonesome I could cry - Hank Williams (1948)

(Although they were both composers,
and they shared the same last name,
it is widely believed that Ralph and Hank never met!)
Du bist die Ruh - Franz Schubert (1827)
Ständchen - ditto
Ideale - Tosti (1905)
Barcarolle - Offenbach "Tales of Hoffmann" (1878)
Quanto e bella - Donizetti "L'Elisir d'amore" (1832)
Nell - Gabriel Fauré (1918)
I get a kick out of you - Cole Porter (1934)
In the Still of the Night - ditto (1938)
Love in the Dictionary - Celius Dougherty (1953)
Foggy, foggy dew - Benjamin Britten (1955)
