"Crossings"
by Richard
A. Heckler "Unexpected invitations
to travel are dancing lessons from God." "If a man could pass through
Paradise in a dream, and have a flower presented to him as a
pledge that his soul had really been there, and if he found that
flower in his hand when he awoke - Ay! and what then?" "The real is only one realization
of the possible." "Some people think that
the mere act of having a supernatural, parapsychological experience
is meaningful. But such an experience is just that: a parapsychological
experience, and that's the end of it. Merely hearing voices does
not mean that one has heard the voice of God. [Conversely] there
are manypeople who really heard something and their very big
mistake was that they didn't identify the voice." "Marvelous physical happenings
can neither replace nor bring about understanding of the spirit,
which is the essential thing." A student approached his spiritual
teacher, bowed in respect and asked: "What is the secret
of life?" "Here is the great key .
. . the two kingdoms are really one. The realm of the Gods is
a forgotten dimension of the world we know. The exploration of
that dimension is the whole sense of the deed of the hero."
These quotes are chapter headings in a marvelous book: "Crossings" by Richard A. Heckler, Ph.D. Sometimes when we least expect it something happens which changes our lives. A voice, an incident, a chance meeting. Such events happen all the time. How do we awaken to these markers; how can we prepare for them; and how do we pay attention to the lessons they bring? These are questions Dr. Heckler attempts to answer in the book. Heckler travelled across the country, talking to people and recording their moving stories of particular moments or experiences that changed their lives. His book offers insight into the mystery of everyday events and into the patterns of change which follow. RICHARD A. HECKLER, Ph.D., is the Director of the Hakomi Institute of San Francisco, and trains therapists throughout the U.S. He is an Associate Professor of Counseling at JFK University and adjunct faculty at the Union Institute of Experimental Studies in Ohio.
