The most important
thing I look for in a musician I myself do nothing.
The Holy Spirit accomplishes all things through me. The music of this
opera [Madama Butterfly] was dictated to me by God; I was merely
instrumental in putting on paper and communicating it to the
public. Straightaway the ideas
flow in upon me, directly from God. Every blade of grass
has its Angel that bends over it and whispers, "Grow, grow."
Great improvisors
are like priests. They are thinking only of their god. What we play is life
Creativity is harnessing
universality and making it flow through your eyes. What lies behind us
and what lies before us are tiny matters, compared to what lies
within us. The true mystery of
the world is the visible, not the invisible. I merely take the
energy it takes to pout and wrote some blues. The words that enlighten
the soul are more precious than jewels. Imagination is more
important than knowledge. Sell your cleverness
and buy bewilderment. Do not fear mistakes
- there are none. The
