He shifts easily between descriptions of jazz, classical and ancient musical traditions. This is a brilliant book about the development and philosophy of music, not a how-to book. Clear, enlightening, very beautifully written, very highly recommended.

This is a deeply spiritual and poetic book, breathtaking in scope, and very moving.

He then shows how all those cultures have influenced Western music. A very good book for understanding the development and importance of music in worldwide human culture.
