ADAMS VOCAL MASTER CLASS
Timeline and Roster 1985-2010

The Adams Vocal Master Class first took place in July, 1985, and until 1993 the program looked a bit different each year. Two or three coaching sessions were held either in the fellowship hall of Church of the Wayfarer or in the downstairs room at Sunset Center. The participants were chosen either by local audition or casually from the Chorale or Chorus during pre-Festival rehearsals. An informal concert or half-recital with piano sometimes took place, in various locations.

David Gordon was invited to lead the program in 1990, and in 1992 he expanded and redesigned the event to create more impact within the festival and beyond. Now, each winter we receive applications from around the world, and through this open audition process we choose our four participants. The six master class sessions during the Festival are held at Carmel Presbyterian Church and are a popular event. Attendance at the 2009 master classes totaled nearly 1,400. During the final weekend of the Festival, the four singers are showcased in a concert onstage with members of the orchestra .

Since 1992 more than 100 Adams Master Class 2-hour public sessions have been hosted by the Carmel Presbyterian Church. The Bach Festival is deeply grateful for the hospitality of the church staff, ministry, and congregation.

Here (in reverse chronological order) is a list of all participants in the Adams Master Class since the first in-house sessions in 1985. Email addresses are the most recent on record in Carmel, and we have no contact info for some singers. Additions and corrections are welcome!
