2010 Festival Baritone Soloist
1994
For the first time, the Master Class singers present a full afternoon recital of Baroque arias with members
of the Festival Orchestra, onstage in Sunset Theater.
From this year onward, sessions
are led by David Gordon and one to three other Festival Soloists, and the repertoire is focused exclusively on the
Baroque era.

1984
The Adams
Master Class Endowment Fund is created by friends and family of Virginia Adams to honor
her on her 80th birthday: a Bach Festival soloist was to be chosen each year to coach selected singers during the Festival,
and the income from the new endowment fund was intended to pay a portion of the singer's fee each summer.
1959
Ansel and Virginia Adams move to Carmel. Both are avid musicians and music lovers, and they become loyal
patrons of the Carmel Bach Festival.
1935
The Carmel Bach Festival is established and gives its
first weekend of concerts.
1770
Mission San Carlo is founded in Carmel. Today it is the site of several Festival concerts
each summer.
1685
Johann Sebastian Bach is born.
1602
Carmel is one of the oldest European place names in North America. Spanish explorer and Carmelite
Friar Sebastian Vizcaino named what are now known as Carmel Valley and Carmel River in honor of his patron saint, Our
Lady of Mount Carmel (and this was five years before the founding
of the Jamestown Colony, and 18 years before the Pilgrims landed at Plymoth Rock).
